Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt?
Playing Sports with Braces
You don’t have to sit on the sidelines just because you have braces! With a few precautions and the right protective gear, you can continue playing your favorite sports. We recommend:
- Mouthguard: A custom-fitted mouthguard is essential for protecting your teeth and braces during contact sports.
- Proper Technique: Learn proper techniques to minimize the risk of injury to your mouth and braces.
- Communication: Let your coach and teammates know you have braces, so they can be mindful during practices and games.
The American Dental Association (ADA) emphasizes the importance of wearing a mouthguard for all contact sports, even if you don’t have braces (ADA, 2023).
Playing Musical Instruments with Braces
Braces can make playing certain instruments a bit more challenging at first, but with practice and adjustments, you’ll be back to making beautiful music in no time. Here are some tips:
- Practice: Regular practice will help you adjust to playing with braces.
- Wax: Use orthodontic wax to cover any brackets or wires that irritate your lips or cheeks.
- Adjustments: Let us know if you’re experiencing any discomfort while playing, and we can adjust your braces to make them more comfortable.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) offers resources and advice for musicians with braces (AAO, 2023).
